7th Day is an intelligent thriller.

Director : Syamdhar
Cast : Prithviraj Sukumaran, Janani Iyer,Anu Mohan,Tovino Thomas,Praveen Prem,Vinay Forrt

I was not very fond of Memories and I didnt think much of Mumbai Police either, so going to another Prithviraj crime movie, I was not expecting much. But, I was pleasantly amazed with this one. It is an edge-of-the-seat-thriller.

Pritviraj plays David Abraham, an IPS officer who is quite determined to prove that the suicide of Vinu (Anu Mohan) is a murder. His interrogation with the victim's friend Shaan(played quite emphatically  by Vinay Fort) reveals the back story, of 5 friends Vinu,Shaan, Eby (Tovino Thomas), Jessica (Janani Iyer) and Cyril Philip (Praveen Prem) and how they were attempting to flee from the Don Christopher Moriarty(inspired from the Sherlock Holmes series, Im sure) for absconding with his counterfeit money . The movie follows the various  paths through which David travels in hopes of uncovering the reason behind the murder.

Now, this is not a hero-centric movie. So even though Prithviraj is the lead, the others also get ample screen time, especially Vinay Fort who delivers probably his career best performance. But the real hero is the script. With so much viable twist and turns the writer and directors gives the audiences capacious pace to guess the plot and then quite conveniently contorts the story to an whole new dimension. That is the USP of the  movie, to a level that if you know the climax, you might as well sit at home.

There are a few pit falls like the really long, unnecessarily slow-motioned climax scene which , if slightly reduced would have been apt but the director really juices out the scene. Pritviraj also seems very artificial in many of the dialogue executions. Also the songs fail to create a long lasting impact, but Background score is highly engaging and full on energy.

Ultimately , Pritviraj does his job quite neatly with a smug smile, and is well supported by the rest of the cast.  Even the small cameo by Joy Mathew was pretty damn good. But watch it for its script  which is pretty loophole-less in almost all aspects. Thumbs up for the debut Director!
